WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF THE ELECTRICAL PANEL

What are the “components” of the switchboard?

Electrical panel components

In this article we address the topic of “components of an electrical panelboard” by referring to standard components, that is, those found in a basic electrical panelboard.

At Secsun, we make custom electrical panels for every need, and if you want to get specific information about a particular component

Only specialized technicians

Given the importance of the switchboard’s function, it is obvious that DIY in any activity involving it is highly inadvisable.

Whether for civilian residential use or industrial use,the switchboard must provide protection, safety, control, and ease of operation of the entire electrical system underneath.

Therefore, the switchboard must be made, installed and operated only by highly qualified personnel, also because it is necessary to comply with CEI ( Italian Electrotechnical Committee) standards.

In fact, the switchboard must be accompanied by the necessary documentation: descriptive report, wiring diagram and declaration of conformity, and for systems above 6 kw power also the project of a duly registered professional engineer.

Main components

At this point the main basic components of the actual framework to fulfill the above responsibilities are:

The container, which will be different shapes and sizes precisely because it depends on the amount of components it has to accommodate inside. It can be built-in, wall-mounted, floor-mounted, indoor or outdoor.

The supports, which inside the framework are used to install the various components. They consist of DIN metal profiles of standardized size useful for interlocking positioning of the components, which are of modular type.

Various components, generally switches, are installed on these rails to connect and disconnect all or part of the system.

Residual current circuit breakers

As technology evolves, switchgear switches are becoming “smarter” every day and able to perform more useful functions and even be controlled remotely via the Internet.

At the entrance to the switchboard of the power line, whether it comes directly from the power meter installed by the supply company or from an internal branch, there is always a main switch, which can then disconnect the entire electrical system underneath. This switch is generally of the differential type, most commonly known as a Lifesaver since this definition was created by the well-known company Bticino in 1965.

This circuit breaker is capable of tripping, that is, automatically disconnecting the power, upon the occurrence of abnormal situations such as electrical leakage to ground, thus protecting people who may be exposed, from electrocution or severe electric shock.

The magneto-thematic switches

After the main switch in the switchboard, other switches are installed that are necessary to perform manual or automatic disconnection of individual parts of the system. For this reason, these switches are also called disconnectors. In this way, when necessary, a single circuit can be turned off and not the entire system.

Generally, these circuit breakers are of the magneto-thermal type, capable of automatically interrupting the flow of electric current upon the occurrence of abnormal phenomena such as short circuit (magnetic trip) or overcurrent (thermal trip).
