The definition of electrical interface switchboard is used to refer to that category of switchboards designed to operate facilities made to produce electricity and deliver it to the grid.
If power generation is through a photovoltaic system, the electrical interface panel will have to be made according to special features and specifications:
– Based on the needs of the specific plant user;
– In compliance with current regulations on the Connection of Active and Passive Users to the BT Network.
According to CEI 0-21 Ed. 2016-07 standard, installations connected to the LV national power grid, if greater than 11.08 kw in power, must be equipped with an external grid interface, compulsorily. For lower power systems, the inverter’s internal interface protection is sufficient, if it complies with the standard.

 

A network protection device

The interface is a grid protection device that must intervene in case of anomalies to prevent the feeding of electricity into the grid, in all cases where the parameters are found to be out of standard.
It is therefore a protection for the safety of the network, but also for the plant and the operators who have to work on it.
In practice, the switchboard must be able to manage the paralleling of the power generation plant with the LV distribution network.
For this reason, the interface panel provides an SPI (Interface Protection System) in addition to circuit breakers to protect the incoming lines from the production field, i.e., from the PV panels.
The SPI makes it possible to constantly monitor the quality of the power grid and, in the event of frequency and/or voltage anomalies, allows the system to be decoupled.

Thus, the interface framework-photovoltaics plays an important role in achieving optimal integration of the power generation plant to the national power grid.
Its function also makes it possible to deal with the fact that these types of plants produce electricity in a discontinuous and fluctuating manner. Solar energy in fact is subject to weather conditions and seasonality.
In addition, depending on the needs of the system user, the type of grid connection will have to be different.
An example of a widespread requirement is to implement on-site exchange. Basically, it allows the user to self-consume the energy produced, releasing only the excess to the grid.
