What carpentry means

One of the structural elements that make up the switchboard is the enclosure or casing. The activity required to make the container concerns the technique related to the construction of the supporting structure of the framework itself. This is the reason why, with good reason, it is referred to as carpentry.

Switchboard carpentry, must ensure the use and operation of the switchboard in multiple aspects. Here are the most important ones from a regulatory perspective:

 

The IP Degree of Protection

This parameter (Ingress Protection Rating) identifies the degree of protection of enclosures for electrical devices, against intrusion of objects, water and dust

The IP degree of protection is a parameter defined by the international standard IEC 60529 implemented by the Italian Electrotechnical Committee standard CEI 70-1.

 

The strength index IK

The strength index IK is the degree of protection against external mechanical impacts. and is specified in European standard EN 62262 (international equivalent IEC 62262:2002). This classification is used to identify the degree of robustness of the switchboard.

The manufacturer of switchboards is obliged to declare in the technical documentation accompanying the switchboard the IP degree of protection and the strength index IK, along with other information in relation to the design of the switchboard. If the picture is:

  • fixed or removable
  • closed or open
  • cabinet-based, bench-based, etc.etc.

 

Structure and materials

The materials used for the framework carpentry range from thermoplastics to galvanized steel sheets, depending on the size and need of the framework, to give the necessary strength and solidity to the structure.

The framework carpentry must ensure easy and safe installation and maintenance activities, taking into account that the dimensions of the frameworks range from several tens of centimeters of the hanging boxes to several meters in length of the cabinets.

Once the scheme of the switchboard has been defined, the dimensional choice of the carpentry must also take into account the thermal power it must be able to dispose of.

 

The methods for calculating internal overtemperatures within the switchboard are given in IEC EN60439.

Structural steel, in addition to being necessary for strength, may also have special features that make it suitable to resist corrosion. In this case, stainless steels made from alloys containing chromium, molybdenum, and nickel are used to ensure the performance of the framework under particularly severe operating conditions.

 

Another aspect that affects the framework’s carpentry is whether it needs to withstand seismic and deflagration hazards. In this case, specific configurations can be made to provide the necessary resistance to the framework.

 

In cabinet configurations, the construction of the basement must ensure proper strength and squareness even in modular configurations.

The structure must be strong enough to withstand electrodynamic stresses and the weight of the equipment and can be arranged for the installation of DIN-pitch electrical equipment.

Panelboard doors can be blind or transparent, with or without a key lock.

Inside, the switchboard is provided with the structure intended for fixing the various devices. They can be pull-out or fixed drawer output units, to allow safe and speedy intervention on each individual unit, without disconnecting power to all utilities, with Rack type set-up.
