Below we address the topic of ATEX Regulations so that you can understand what it is all about in a simple and concise manner.

ATEX regulations

What it is about

When we speak of ATEX regulations, we are referring to a regulatory provision that has its origins in European Union directives issued on the prevention of explosion risk in those workplaces where potentially explosive elements, such as gases, vapors and dusts, may be present in the air.

The name ATEX is actually derived from the initials of ATmospheres EXplosives.

There are two directives in question:
ATEX 2014/34/EU (or ATEX 114) which defines the Essential Safety Requirements (RES) of products, so it refers to the responsibilities of manufacturers of goods and services.
ATEX 1999/92/EC (or ATEX 153), which covers the safety of workplaces for the protection of workers’ health.

These regulations have been implemented in Italy since the Presidential Decree of March 23, 1998 no. 126 and have been subsequently modified and updated due to the natural need for continuous improvement.
The standards as a whole set guidelines, define the rules to be observed and clarify the criteria to be followed to implement effective explosion hazard prevention activities.

ATEX symbols

Stakeholders’ compliance with the standards authorizes them to use the specific symbols they need to identify:
Areas where there is a likelihood of the presence of explosive atmosphere in workplaces
products made in accordance with the directives

The whole set of indications in the standards is summarized in tables that make it possible to classify each specific aspect concerning the explosion hazard and to indicate it graphically in a concise and immediately clear and usable manner,
wherever needed, such as manuals, instructions, blueprints, reports, equipment marking.

Thus there are classification tables, and their symbols, representing:
Areas, i.e., hazardous areas where the explosive elements can be found
Temperatures, those surface temperatures attainable by the equipment during operation, including the case of any failure
Products, i.e., the level of protection that the equipment provides
Ways of protection, i.e., the techniques used to prevent the risk of explosion
